Introduction.

You don’t need academic qualifications to be a good photographer. Just the desire to improve your picture-making techniques. Remember, every successful photographer was once a complete beginner. Success is simply a matter of knowing what to do.

This course is for digital SLR camera users. Or do you have a digital camera that has manual controls for setting aperture and shutter speed? Great! This course is all about taking better quality photographs and knowing how to get the most out of your camera. Any brand. Old or new.

Freelance

The course is conducted by correspondence (home study), in simple non-jargon plain English. Your tutor is an experienced expert. You’ll see the improvement in your photos as you progress through the exercises. That’s guaranteed. You can live anywhere.

Photography can be a fun hobby, and a significant second-income earner. Whether you are a novice or a reasonably competent photographer, this is where you can learn in one year what most photographers take a lifetime to know.

Freelance Digital PhotographyThis course is also for new photographers who want to know how to get paid for their photos. Thousands of photographs are purchased every day from local freelance photographers for use in New Zealand and elsewhere in the world. Whenever you see (c) copyright on a photo – someone is getting a nice royalty. That could be YOU! As you’ll discover, photography can be a hobby or a rewarding business that goes far beyond merely taking snaps.

By the time you complete this freelance photography course, you will have an intimate understanding of photography – and the business opportunities.

Soon, when friends comment on your photos, you can say “Yes, it took me a year but I learned how to be a freelance photographer. Now I’m in business!”

Tutor Profile.

Photography tutor Robert is the owner of Albany Studios and an established commercial photographer since 1981. Robert trained photography in Holland and travelled extensively through Europe before migrating to New Zealand in 1973. One of the reasons for coming to New Zealand was the fact that there was no pollution, no political turmoil and a relaxed calm lifestyle.

In 1976 Robert gained his New Zealand commercial qualifications and portrait qualifications from the NZIPP. Much of his commercial work was used in the 80s and mid 90s to illustrate books, including cookbooks, travel books and photography books. The book The New Zealand House written by Sir Michael Fowler and photographed by Robert won a publishing award in 1984. He continued writing for Photography International as a feature writer creating technical articles. The Photographer’s Mail was another monthly publication for which Robert contributed his monthly articles.

In 1982 Robert collaborated as a photography tutor at the NZIBS and a guest lecturer at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and Unitec. After 20 years he has stopped lecturing at AUT and Unitec, concentrating on his studio work, commercial product shots, model shots and many other various interesting projects for designers and agencies.

At present his assignments are varied, since the advent of digital photography studio has made many changes to accommodate the demand for advertising photography on the Internet. Painting with light is one of his interests, he bought specialist equipment to pursue this exciting aspect of photography. Concentrating on studio photography only, creating the light that exists outdoors inside in all its many variations is a continual challenge. He loves it. He actually loves photography, he stated once he has never worked in his life, photography is not working but living the dream.

Computers, software, digital cameras, photographic lighting and his studio are his passion. With his extensive knowledge of photography and practical experience as a photographer dealing with advertising clients for so many years he will happily share his knowledge and experiences with you.
